The site features three historic houses furnished with the "plain"
pine furniture of the early Sandhills. The Shaw House, circa 1820, is the oldest
house in Southern Pines on its original foundation and is typical of the
ante-bellum homes which came after the cabins of the early settlers in the
Sandhills. It displays the charm of sturdy simplicity highlighted by fine detail
on two wooden fireplace mantels of unusual beauty. The Sanders cabin is over 200
years old and has been cited as an excellent example of a one room cabin of an
early settler. The Garner House is typical of many rural homes of early Moore
County and is one of the finest examples that remains today. It is distinguished
by wide board heart-pine paneling with fine quality moldings at the windows and
doors. The original hand-forged hinges are intact on the original doors, and
much of the furniture is original to the house.

Site Hours: Wednesday through Sunday from 1-4 PM. Group tours can be arranged and luncheons are served to groups of 10 to 25 by advanced reservation. Admission is by suggested donation of $2.00; children are always admitted free.
